How it works
The calculator isolates the one part of a safari where private and shared genuinely differ: the vehicle. A private trip charges a daily rate for the whole 4x4 – car, driver-guide and fuel – which you divide among everyone in your own party. A shared trip charges each of you a per-seat day rate instead, and fills the remaining seats with other travellers. Everything else on a safari – the camps, the park fees, the meals – is broadly the same either way, so the vehicle is where the real cost decision lives.
Multiply each daily figure by your trip length and you get the per-person vehicle cost for both options, and the difference between them is the true private premium for your trip. The defaults use typical 2026 rates, but every operator differs, so slide them to match a real quote and the numbers sharpen. Why the premium shrinks
Here's the insight the calculator makes obvious the moment you drag the party slider: the private premium collapses as your group grows. A private vehicle at, say, $300 a day costs one solo traveller the full $300 per day, but a couple only $150 each, and four people just $75 each – while the shared seat rate stays flat at, say, $100 per person no matter what. So somewhere around three or four sharing, private stops being a splurge and starts rivalling – occasionally beating – the shared price per head.
This is why blanket advice like "private is much dearer" is misleading. It's true for a solo traveller and often false for a family of four. The right question is never "is private expensive?" but "how many of us are splitting the vehicle?" – and once you know that, the calculator tells you whether the privacy and control of your own 4x4 costs a lot or almost nothing. What it doesn't include
The calculator deliberately isolates the vehicle, because that's the honest heart of the private-versus-shared decision – but a full safari price is more than the 4x4. On top of the figures here sit your camps or lodges, the park and conservation fees (a big line on any East African trip), meals, tips, and any flights. Those are broadly similar whether your vehicle is private or shared, which is exactly why the tool leaves them out: they don't change the private-vs-shared maths.

So which should you book?
